Oney was one of two Southeastern student-athletes to be named to the first team, along with senior forward Kristin McDonald. The Lady Lions also had five honorable mention selections – junior defender Shalayne Heffner, junior midfielder Candice Wallace, sophomore midfielder Natalie Santana, sophomore defender Nicole Brannigan and freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus.
The honor for Oney, a native of Centennial, Colo. native, was her second Newcomer of the Year award, as she received the same honor from the Southland Conference last month. Oney finished the season with three goals and four assists in her first season out of Metro State.
For the fifth time in school history, Southeastern has had the SLC and LSWA Newcomer of the Year, as Oney joins McDonald (2007), as well as former Lady Lions Crista Wood (2004), Kim McNalley (2002) and Linn Vilson (1999). Oney is also the second member of her family to earn first team All-Louisiana honors, as her older sister, Kendra, was a first team selection in 2001 and 2003.
McDonald, a product of St. Catherines, Ont., was named to the first team for the second straight season. The senior led the way for Southeastern with eight goals and four assists, finishing the season and her career among the school's career leaders in goals and points.
Santana, a Cypress, Calif. native and Wallace, who hails from Guelph, Ont., were the top performers in the midfield for the Lady Lions. The pair tied for the team and SLC lead with eight assists.
A second team All-SLC selection, Santana was perhaps Southeastern's top all around player with four goals and eight assists. A two-time All-SLC pick, Wallace finished her junior campaign ranked among the school's career leaders in goals, assists and points. Wallace and Santana also both converted penalty kicks in helping the Lady Lions advance in the SLC Tournament with a shootout victory over Stephen F. Austin.
The Southeastern defense was dominant all season, tying a school record with 13 goals allowed. Much of that was due to the play of Brannigan, a Long Beach, Calif. native, and Heffner, a product of Shingle Springs, Calif., on the back line. Both were selected to the All-SLC honorable mention selections in 2008, with Heffner being honored by the league for the second straight season.
Bockhaus, a native of San Leandro, Calif., was tremendous in goal for the Lady Lions. In her first season in Hammond, Bockhaus finished the season with a school record 0.67 goals against average. In addition, Bockhaus finished with an SLC-best nine shutouts.
McNeese State forward Kamryn Koch was named the Player of the Year for the second straight year, while LSU head coach Brian Lee repeated as the state's top coach. LSU goalkeeper Mo Isom was tabbed Freshman of the Year and one of five Lady Tigers on the first team.
The All-Louisiana Team was selected by the state's sports information directors.
