Lady Lions Drop 3-2 Nailbiter at UTSA

Southeastern volleyball falls just short in five against Roadrunners

Box Score

Southeastern at Texas-Sanantonio Box Score (.html format)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior setter Katie Collins totaled 34 assists, sophomore libero Alex Greer and junior defensive specialist Margaret Pittman combined for 24 digs and junior right side hitter Srajer totaled 15 kills and was one of four Lady Lions to hit .200 or better as the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (9-16, 3-11 Southland Conference) forced perennial SLC West Division power Texas San-Antonio (18-10, 10-4 SLC) to the brink on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, the Lady Lions fell just short of scoring the upset after scores of 25-17, 17-25, 20-25, 25-15 and 7-15 gave UTSA the 3-2 win.

The Lady Lion defense paved the way in the first set as Southeastern recorded 11 digs and 5.0 team blocks to stymie the Roadrunners and overcome a .188 team hitting percentage in the opening frame.

Junior middle blocker Julie Elliott led the way for Southeastern's front line defense, totaling 4.0 block assists.  Meanwhile, the Lady Lion offense got three kills each from Elliott, senior middle blocker LaToya Anthony and sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans to help Southeastern cruise to a 25-17 win in the opening frame.

Unfortunatley, for Southeastern, the Roadrunners' potent offense got on track in the second set.  UTSA combined to hit .387 (15-3-31) as a team as fortunes were reversed from the first set with the Lady Lions taking a 25-17 loss to even the match at one.

The Roadrunners continued their hot hitting in the third with a .341 team hitting percentage (16-2-41).  However, the Lady Lions stayed with UTSA, posting a .250 mark (14-3-44).  Srajer, Evans and freshman middle blocker Paige Dollison each had three kills to help the Southeastern cause, but a late run by UTSA gave the Roadrunners the 25-20 win.

Trying to force a fifth set, the Lady Lions responded with their best offensive performance of the afternoon in the fourth.  Southeastern amassed a .259 hitting percentage (10-3-27).  Srajer led the offensive charge once again with four more kills with Anthony adding another three.

Meanwhile, the Lady Lion defense rebounded with 13 digs and a pair of critical blocks: one by Srajer and Anthony and another by freshman middle blocker Paige Dollison to keep UTSA at bay as a 13-3 Southeastern run closed things out to force a fifth and deciding set.

Unfortunately, for Southeastern, UTSA ended any hopes for an upset with their best offensive output of the afternoon.  Totaling a .556 hitting percentage (11-1-18), the Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead.  The Lady Lions were able to pull to within two early on at 4-2, but that's as close as Southeastern would get en route to a 15-7 win in the finale.

The Lady Lions will now prepare for their final road match of the season, a makeup contest at Southern on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.  Following the conclusion of their longest road trip of the season, the Lady Lions will return to Hammond for the final two matches of the 2008 regular season against SLC East Division leader Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 13 and against in-state rival McNeese State on Nov. 15.
