Carlin Lifts Lady Lions to 78-52 Rout of Centenary

Southeastern posts program's most lopsided road win since 1996-97

Box Score

SHREVEPORT – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team marched out to a 19-2 lead and never looked back on the way to a 78-52 road win over Centenary in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Gold Dome.

Southeastern improved to 3-2 overall and won its third straight contest. The Lady Lions also picked up their first road victory of the season – the largest victory away from Hammond by Southeastern since a 78-38 win at Texas Southern during the 1996-97 season.

Southeastern dominated every facet of the game. Senior forward Kristy Carlin posted her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Kim Edmonson chipped in 16 points off the bench, while junior forward Zevy Ivory added 10 points. The Lady Lions shot 47 percent (31-for-66) from the floor, while holding Centenary to 25.5 percent (13-for-51) from the floor. Eleven different Lady Lions scored in the victory.

Southeastern held an overwhelming rebounding advantage, finishing with a 49-28 rebounding edge. Carlin led the way with her season-high total, while Ivory and senior center Adonna Weaver pulled down six boards each.

For the second time in the past three games, Southeastern posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, finishing with a season-high 18 assists versus just 13 turnovers. Senior guard Charinee Mitchell dished out five assists and did not commit a turnover, while freshman guard Kelli Jenkins finished with six assists.

Perhaps the most impressive factor in Southeastern's victory was the Lady Lions were able to control the game while missing leading scorer Quantae Thomas, who missed the game due to illness. Southeastern head coach Lori Davis Jones was extremely pleased with her team's effort.

“This was a great win for us,” Jones commented. “We came ready to play in every facet of the game. Kristy set the tone for us and showed great senior leadership today. She came out with an excellent energy level and the rest of our team fed off that. Our team effort was outstanding today. We need to maintain that high energy level and continue to improve.”

Southeastern played one of its better halves in recent memory, dominating every facet of the opening period on the way to a 43-18 advantage. Carlin had 14 points and eight rebounds in the first half, while Ivory chipped in 10 points. Carlin helped Southeastern out-rebound 26-13 in the opening half.

The Lady Lions held Centenary without a field goal in the first nine minutes of the opening half and just 19 percent from the floor. Southeastern took a 19-2 lead eight minutes in and led by as many as 27 in the opening period.

Centenary (1-4) got no closer than 20 in the second half.  Chelsea Johnson led the Ladies with 14 points, while Anne Farrell added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Southeastern will now return home to host William Carey on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center. Southeastern's next road trip is scheduled for Thursday, as the Lady Lions will head to Ole Miss for an 11 a.m. contest.
