SOUTHEASTERN SQUANDERS SCORING CHANCES IN 1-0 LOSS TO SHSU

Southeastern falls to 0-2 in SLC play despite 10-3 shot advantage

HAMMOND – Sam Houston State's April Lozano scored in the match's 65th minute to break a scoreless tie and help the Bearkats hand Southeastern Louisiana a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions (6-3-1, 0-2 SLC) had the advantage in every area but the scoreboard. Southeastern out-shot the Bearkats (7-2, 2-0 SLC), 10-3, and recorded five corner kicks to two from Sam Houston State. However, Southeastern had trouble finding the net for the second straight match, leading to the Lady Lions' second 0-2 start in league play in school history.

“We felt like we dominated the match in every area but the scoreboard today,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. “However, we made two small mistakes this weekend that were the difference between being 2-0 instead of 0-2 in league play. Sam Houston State had one good scoring chance and to their credit they finished their chance. We have to be more opportunistic when we have scoring chances as we move forward in Southland Conference play.”

Southeastern held Sam Houston to one shot in the opening period. Bearkat goalkeeper Jenny Pence had four saves in the first half, stopping shots by Southeastern senior Kristin McDonald, freshman Kyle MacIntosh and two by junior Dana Mayer.

Sam Houston State took advantage of their best scoring opportunity just under 10 minutes into the second half. Luana Miessa played a perfect cross to an open Lozano, who fired in a shot from short range past Southeastern freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus.

The Lady Lions were on the attack from there on out. Mayer and junior Candice Wallace each narrowly missed scoring opportunities. Pence finished with seven saves and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

Southeastern will look to bounce back as Southland Conference play continues next week. The Lady Lions head to Texas State on Friday for a 7 p.m. match before facing UTSA on Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
