The Lady Lions (6-2-1, 0-1 SLC) had several streaks snapped on Friday. It was the team's first loss in their last four matches and also ended Southeastern's 19-match home unbeaten streak. SFA improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in SLC play. The Ladyjacks are the first visiting team to win on Southeastern's home pitch since Southern Miss earned a 2-1 victory over the Lady Lions on Sept. 24, 2006.
“This was a tough loss, but hopefully one we can learn from as conference play continues,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We had some miscommunication on the goal they scored and that was the difference on the scoreboard. We put great pressure on them in the second half, but we couldn't capitalize on several scoring opportunities. We've got to be better in that area.”
Stephen F. Austin had its first scoring opportunity in the match's 26th minute. Megan Cash's shot rifled off the crossbar just out of the reach of Southeastern freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus.
The Ladyjacks found the net near the end of the half. A big throw in by Edwina Forbes bounced over the head of two Southeastern defenders, causing Bockhaus to charge out of the net. Lackey got to the loose ball a step ahead of Bockhaus and tapped it into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal allowed by Bockhaus, who finished with four saves, after 310 consecutive minutes of scoreless action in goal.
While SFA controlled the first half for the most part, Southeastern was clearly the aggressor in the final period. The Lady Lions held a 5-1 shot advantage and were awarded four corner kicks in the final period.
Southeastern had several chances in the early part of the second half. Six minutes into the final period, Lady Lion junior Candice Wallace hit a shot from close range, but SFA goalkeeper Courtney Bauder made a nice diving stop to keep Southeastern off the board.
The Lady Lions had three corner kicks over the next five minutes, but could not connect. On the third, a header by senior Kristin McDonald just missed wide left of the near post.
A shot by junior Dana Mayer sailed just wide in the match's 72nd minute. The Lady Lions final scoring try came with 11 minutes left, as sophomore Natalie Santana hit a header off a corner kick sailed inches above the crossbar. SFA held Southeastern without a shot to complete the shutout.
Southeastern will look to get back on track on Sunday, when it hosts league foe Sam Houston State at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
