HAMMOND - Southeastern running back Ray Perkins, playing in his final regular-season game at home, rushed for a career-high 188 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Lions piled up 570 yards total offense and crushed Texas College, 54-14, Thursday night at Strawberry Stadium.
Perkins, who tied former Lion Mack Boatner for the fifth-best single-game performance in school history, scored on runs of 1, 7 and 4 yards and became the first Southeastern player to rush for 1,000 yards since Jerry Butler ran for 1,092 yards in 1984. The Vanderbilt transfer, who has 1,014 yards rushing on the season, added a pair of receptions to push his all-purpose total to 1,443 yards.
Southeastern (7-3) scored on its first four possessions as Martin Hankins threw three touchdowns in the first half and completed 27-of-35 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns before being lifted by Trey Willie and Chase Holbrook. Hankins, who completed a Division I-AA record 21 consecutive passes last week at Jacksonville (Fla.) before being lifted, completed his first six passes against the out-manned Steers (5-6), who dropped their third straight game to end the season.
Perkins scored on a 1-yard plunge on the Lions' opening possession before Hankins connected with Jeffrey Howard on a 34-yard TD pass to put Southeastern ahead, 13-0. The Lions added two more scores in the first quarter as Hankins hit Felton Huggins on a 22-yard TD pass and Keylam Davis on a 14-yard strike.
Texas College (5-6) got on the board in the second quarter when Broderick Walker caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Olan Johnson to cap a 10-play, 85-yard drive. Perkins added a 7-yard run for Southeastern, which led 33-7 at halftime.
Southeastern scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter as Brooks Jordan caught a 7-yard pass from Hankins, Donald Frazier recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and Perkins added a 4-yard TD run to give Southeastern a 54-7 lead.
Howard, who caught nine touchdown passes last season in the Lions' first football campaign since 1985, had seven receptions for a career-high 108 yards for the Lions as 12 different players had a reception. Damien Huren led Southeastern with eight tackles, including his team-high 11th sack of the year.
