HANKINS, LIONS HOLD OFF DELTA DEVILS, 33-17

HAMMOND - Southeastern's Martin Hankins completed 30 of 49 passes for 368 yards and a pair of touchdown passes as the Lions overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and defeated Mississippi Valley State, 33-17, Saturday night before an announced crowd of 9,021 at Strawberry Stadium.

Felton Huggins caught eight passes - all in the second half - for 131 yards and Jeffrey Howard had seven catches for 62 yards and a touchdown as Southeastern (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak.

After completing 9 of 20 passes for 70 yards in a sluggish first half, Hankins was 17-for-20 for 234 yards and fired touchdown passes of 35 yards to Hutch Gonzales and 24 yards to Howard as the Lions erased a 17-7 halftime deficit and built a 30-17 lead.

Ray Perkins added a pair of touchdowns for the Lions, including a 94-yard kickoff return that gave Southeastern a 7-3 lead with 10:44 remaining in the first half. Perkins, who accumulated 154 all-purpose yards, rushed for 57 yards in the game and scored on a 5-yard run on the Lions' first drive of the third quarter that cut the MVSU lead to 17-14.

MVSU (0-5) took a 3-0 lead on its opening possession as John Zdonek booted a 29-yard field goal. The Delta Devils reclaimed the lead at 10-7 with 7:16 left in the first quarter when John Pierre Marshall blocked a Jim Hall punt at the Southeastern 38 and Jermayel Brown recovered in the end zone.

Curtis Kemp added a 1-yard touchdown for MVSU, which gained 389 yards total offense, including 218 on the ground. Marcus April led the Delta Devils with 102 yards while Aries Nelson completed 16-of-28 passes for 141 yards.
