HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Troy Thursday evening in Strawberry Stadium.
Southeastern (2-1) extended its two-match winning streak with a victory over Troy (0-2) to open its home stretch. The Lions earned their first home win of the season against the Trojans as they secured a break in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Kendall Curran played all 90 minutes in the net with five saves to aid in the green and gold's victory.
Both teams battled in the opening minutes to set the tone of the match. As both teams continued their advances, Troy came out aggressive on the road and worked to push the ball up the pitch. The Trojans intercepted multiple SLU passes, but the hosts persevered until a solid gap within the defense opened.
Senior Ella Quinlan connected in the net in the 38th minute of the match to help Southeastern secure a 1-0 lead over Troy. Quinlan recorded her second straight goal off a header, assisted by junior Anna-Claire Schwing, to turn the tide of momentum in favor of the Lions. SLU remained aggressive to close out the first half, seeking to extend its lead with a home field advantage.
The Lions returned from the halftime break with a refreshed intensity as they worked to spread Troy's defense. The Trojans battled to equalize the match with near attempts around the net, but SLU's backline of defense remained on mission to limit opportunities. Curran and Loegan Alia showcased great effort as they stepped up for the green and gold to block Troy from easy look at the net.
Southeastern continued to remain in control midway through the second half as the Trojans desperately worked to gain an opportunity to break free. Troy launched nine shots in the second half in an effort to cut into its deficit, but the visitors could not connect. SLU steadily worked to further its lead, but would not be able to add to its lead.
The green and gold closed out the contest with six shots, three shots on goal and three corner kicks. The Trojans posted 15 shots, five shots on goal and three corner kick opportunities to finish the match as Southeastern prevailed to claim the win.
The Lions will look to maintain their momentum at home as they host Spring Hill College Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's match against the Badgers will be streamed on ESPN+.
