BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team battled to its second straight road victory to open Southland Conference play, earning a 4-3 victory over Lamar Monday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Southeastern (9-2, 2-0 SLC) earned the doubles point and then won on the bottom three singles courts to remain unbeaten in league action. Lamar fell to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in SLC play.
"These two wins were about the fight we have as a team," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "To be shorthanded on the road and to come back to Hammond, America 2-0 in conference play shows our toughness. We're still a work in progress, but its easy to be motivated moving forward when you're undefeated."
In doubles play, the SLU pair of
Bente Bierma and
Paige Duncan (4-3, 1-1 SLC) earned a 6-4 victory over Arina Gudovskaya and Luana Paiva on court 1. On No. 3,
Adriana Tirado and
Mariam Tetradze (7-3, 1-1 SLC) clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a 7-5 victory over Martina Alcaino and Lera Zaginako.
Straight-set singles wins by Duncan (7-1, 2-0 SLC) and
Aitana Darder (3-1, 2-0 SLC) gave Southeastern a 3-0 lead, but Lamar countered with victories on the top two singles courts to cut the advantage to 3-2.
Tirado (9-1, 2-0 SLC) added to her team-high singles win total to clinch the match. The Lion freshman outlasted Alcaino, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, on court 6 to give Southeastern the grueling victory.
Southeastern will open the home portion of its league schedule with a 1 p.m. match with UTRGV Saturday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
