Southeastern Improves to 3-0 with 4-0 Shutout of Southern

SLU hosts Alcorn State and Copiah-Lincoln CC Tuesday

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team remained unbeaten this spring with a 4-0 nonconference victory over Southern Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

SLU (3-0) outlasted Southern (0-2) in a very competitive doubles point, then won the three singles matches necessary to claim the win.

"Doubles is going to be important for us all spring and today was no exception," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "Once we won doubles, we were relaxed heading into singles play. We have good depth on this roster and that's helped us overcome some injuries in these first three matches."

On the No. 3 doubles court, freshmen Adriana Tirado and Mariam Tetradze (3-0) remained unbeaten this spring with a 6-2 victory over the Southern pair of Shahd Habib and Samara Onwuteaka.

Southern countered with a win on court 2, but the Southeastern pair of Paige Duncan and Bente Bierma (2-1) gave SLU a 1-0 lead with a 7-6 win over Decora Antoine and Tshegofatso Tsiang on the No. 1 court.

Three of Southeastern's newcomers continued their respective unbeaten starts to their Lion careers. On No. 3, Mariam Makashvili (3-0) doubled the SLU advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Antoine.

Duncan (3-0) followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory of her own, besting Ratidzo Mabukwa on court 5. Moments later, Tirado (3-0) clinched the win on No. 6 over Hayley McGhee, 6-2, 6-1. SLU's Panathchakorn Suanarsa (No. 1), Bierma (No. 2) and Tetradze (No. 3) all were up a set on their respective singles courts when the match was called.

Southeastern returns to action Tuesday, hosting Alcorn State at 2 p.m. and Copiah-Lincoln Community College at 5 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. Live stats for Tuesday's matches will be accessible via the golf schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
