Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Newcomers Pace SLU's 5-2 Victory in Spring Opener

Tirado, Tetradze, Makashvili and Duncan all win in singles in Southeastern dual-match debuts

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2025-26 schedule with a 5-2 victory over LSU Alexandria Tuesday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

SLU (1-0) took the doubles point, then all four of its newcomers earned singles wins to clinch the victory. LSUA, ranked 10th in the latest national NAIA poll, fell to 0-1 overall.

The match was originally scheduled to be played in Alexandria, but was moved to Hammond due to inclement weather. As a result, Southeastern opened the spring campaign with a 5-2 home victory over the Generals for the second straight year.

"We're very appreciative of LSUA and its willingness to come to us in order to ensure we could get the match in," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "We had a real battle in doubles and we were able to carry that momentum over into singles. We're encouraged to see our four newcomers – three who are freshmen and making their collegiate debuts – be the ones to earn the singles points necessary for us to get off to a great start to the spring."

The Lions opened the match by taking the doubles point. Freshmen Mariam Tetradze and Adriana Tirado claimed a 6-1 victory on court 3 over LSUA's Amaya Bobadilla Valdez and Kanu Rajawat. On No. 2, SLU returners Taisia Bolsova and Aitana Darder paired for a 7-5 win over Ekaterina Orlova and Isabella Stuurman to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Newcomer Paige Duncan doubled the Southeastern lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Orlova on court 5. Tetradze stretched the SLU advantage to 3-0 with 6-0, 6-3 win over Jolene Roesch on No. 3.

After LSUA got on the board with a straight-set win on the top singles court, Lion freshman Mariam Makashvili swept past Stuurman, 6-1, 6-1, on court 2. Tirado closed out the scoring for Southeastern with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over LSUA's Esthella Valentina Gonzalez Saiza.

Tuesday's match was the first of three on tap for SLU this week. The Lions will travel to Louisiana Christian for a 2 p.m. match Saturday, before returning home to host Southern at 2 p.m. Sunday.
