HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Chattanooga in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU fell to 6-2 overall despite singles victories by
Mariam Tetradze (6-0) and
Paige Duncan (5-1). The visiting Mocs (7-1) rode the momentum of taking a highly-competitive doubles point to earn the singles victories necessary to clinch the victory.
"Doubles was very close and we had our opportunity, but credit Chattanooga for coming up big," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We played with great energy on every court, but they just played a little better than we did. We learned some lessons today that we'll only help us moving forward."
In doubles play, Duncan teamed with
Bente Bierma (3-2) earned a 6-4 victory over Chattanooga's Addison Iacono and Rufaro Margarita on the No. 1 court. UTC countered with a 7-5 win on court 3, then took a 1-0 lead with a 7-6 (7-4) victory on No. 2.
Duncan made short work of Zara Burns in a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court 5 in singles play. But the Mocs claimed straight-set victories on courts 1,2,3 and 6 to secure the road win. Tetradze rallied past Emma Pedretti, 1-6, 6-2, 10-4, to trim the final margin.
Southeastern will close out pre-Southland Conference play Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at Dillard.
