HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team bounced back from a one-run loss Saturday at the hands of Houston Christian to defeat the Huskies, 10-2, Sunday in the finale of a Southland Conference series at Husky Field.
Southeastern (33-11, 18-6 SLC) claimed the series, two games to one, from HCU (23-19, 15-9 SLC). Coupled with UTRGV's win Sunday over McNeese (17-7 SLC), the Lions moved into sole possession of first place in the conference standings with two weekends remaining in the regular season.
Early on, the bats appeared to have the upper hand as both teams scored runs in each of the first two innings.
Mo Little delivered an RBI single in the first, driving home
TJ Salvaggio, and
Parker Coley's RBI double in the second plated
Peyton Woods.
With one out in the third and the bases loaded for the Huskies, SLU brought on
Truitt Webb in relief. The freshman right-hander induced a fly ball to right field. Coley hauled in the ball for the second out and then threw out the runner attempting to score, completing the inning-ending double play.
Southeastern took the lead for good in the fourth, 3-2. Coley reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and then scored on
Giovanni Licciardi's two-out RBI single to center.
The bullpens combined to calm down the bats until SLU sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh, pushing across five runs.
Jude Hall's two-run home run to right capped the inning. It was his seventh of the season.
Giovanni Licciardi provided some insurance with a two-run single in the ninth.
Webb (1-0) earned the first win of his collegiate career, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out one. HCU starting pitcher Ben Smith (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – in 3.2 innings pitched.
Nick Gisclair,
Kaleb Howell and
Aiden Vosburg joined Webb in providing scoreless relief outings.
Woods (4-for-5), Coley (2-for-5), Licciardi (2-for-5) and Salvaggio (2-for-5) contributed multiple hits for the Lions.
