SLU Falls in Extra Innings at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team fell, 5-4, Saturday to Memphis in 10 innings at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.

Southeastern (11-3) took an early 2-0 lead over Memphis (9-5) in the third inning. An error by Memphis first baseman Shane Cox kept the inning alive, allowing Logan Walters to reach. TJ Salvaggio followed with a two-run homer to left-center field. It was the second of the season for the senior from Slidell, Louisiana.

The Tigers cut the SLU lead in half in the third, loading the bases before Memphis center fielder James Smith IV scored on a wild pitch.

The teams traded scoreless frame after scoreless frame until Memphis tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Smith drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice groundout. During that stretch between the fifth and eighth, the Lions left eight runners on base.

Southeastern regained the lead in the 10th on a two-run, opposite-field home run by Ben Robichaux, but the Lion bullpen was unable to close out the game. Three SLU relievers combined to walk three and hit a batter, setting up the game-winning hit by Memphis right fielder CJ Willis.

Kylan Stepter (1-0) earned the win despite allowing Robichaux's home run. He surrendered two runs – both earned – on two hits and a pair of walks, striking out two. Nick Gisclair (1-1) suffered the loss. He was charged with two runs – both earned – in 0.1 inning pitched.

Bailyn Sorensen (2-for-3) turned in a multi-hit performance for the Lions at the plate.
