HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader, 11-0 and 17-2, in run-rule fashion Saturday against Alcorn State at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, completing the series sweep of the Braves.
Southeastern (7-1), which never trailed in the series, applied offensive pressure throughout. In addition to several players enjoying multi-hit performances, the Lions walked four times as often as they struck out in both games combined.
Dane Watts picked up multiple hits in both games, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and a pair of RBIs in the first game. The Hammond native followed that up by going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs in the second contest.
TJ Salvaggio (2-for-2),
Bailyn Sorensen (2-for-3) and
Logan Walters (2-for-4) contributed multiple hits in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Peyton Woods, a native of Albany, Louisiana, went 3-for-4 in the second contest with a game-high five RBIs.
SLU set a program record, drawing 18 walks in the final game against Alcorn (0-5). The previous record of 15 was accomplished three times, most recently on March 2, 2010, against Jackson State.
The Lions face their first road trip of the season Wednesday, traveling to UL Lafayette for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
GAME ONE – SLU 11, Alcorn 0 (7 innings)
Watts got the offense going in the second inning with a one-out, solo home run to right field. It was the first of his career.
SLU loaded the bases in the fourth and Salvaggio cleared them with a triple to left-center field.
Parker Coley, Sorensen and
Giovanni Licciardi all scored.
In the fifth, Walters drove in
Mo Little with an RBI double down the left-field line and later came around to score on Watts' RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Lions' final five runs came in the sixth. Walters plated a pair with a single up the middle. Licciardi, who came up in a bases-loaded situation, cleared the bases with a double down the third-base line.
Lakin Polk (2-0) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win. He surrendered a pair of hits and three walks, striking out seven batters. He combined with
Tony Torres, who worked the final two frames, on the shutout. Jermel Ford (0-2) suffered the loss for Alcorn, allowing six runs – all earned – in the 4.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO – SLU 17, Alcorn 2 (7 innings)
Southeastern left little doubt in the second game, scoring six runs in the first inning.
Ryan Brome scored on a wild pitch and Salvaggio scored on a passed ball. Coley drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and Watts plated
Conner O'Neal with a sacrifice fly to center. Woods drove in both
Ben Robichaux and Coley with a double to right-center, the Lions' only hit of the inning.
Woods drove in two more in the third with another double to right-center.
Pinch-hitters
Brady McGee and
Gray Rowlett picked up RBIs in the fifth, McGee with an RBI single to center while Rowlett drew a bases-loaded walk.
After the Braves scored their only two runs of the series in the top of the sixth, SLU scored its final seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. The only two hits of the inning were an RBI single by Woods and a two-run double by Watts.
Blake Lobell (1-0) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his Southeastern debut, earning the win.
Aiden Vosburg (3.0 IP) and
Nick Gisclair (1.0 IP) also turned in scoreless outings for the Lions. Myles Dews, who suffered the loss, retired a single batter and was charged with six runs.
