HAMMOND, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the spring Tuesday, dropping a 7-0 decision to UL Lafayette in nonconference action at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU fell to 1-1 overall, as the visiting Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) swept the Lions in both singles and doubles play.
"We played hard, but poor footwork and poor decision making can't be overcome against a team as talented as UL Lafayette," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We have two great opportunities this weekend to improve in both of those areas, as well as our on-court body language."
The Ragin' Cajuns took a 1-0 lead in doubles play with very competitive matches on the No. 2 and 3 courts. On court 3, SLU's
Taisia Bolsova and
Bogi Csordas rallied from a 5-2 deficit before ultimately falling, 6-4, to Ivana Castillo and Rocio Navarro. UL Lafayette completed the doubles sweep on No. 2, as Nina Krecklenberg and Kamea Medora outlasted the Lion duo of
Aitana Darder and
Leana Gomez, 7-5.
In singles play, the Ragin' Cajuns earned straight-set victories on courts 1, 2, 3 and 5, to clinch the victory. On No. 4, Navarro rallied past Southeastern's
Claudia Di Leonardo for a 6-2, 6-1, 10-5 victory. Medora solidified the shutout with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 win over Bolsova on court 6.
UL Lafayette was the first of three in-state foes slated to visit Hammond this week. The Lions will host Grambling Saturday at 1 p.m. and Dillard Sunday at 3 p.m.
