Southeastern Drops 2-0 on the Road

SLU will move forward to take on the reigning Southland Conference champions Lamar in Strawberry Stadium Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

COMMERCE, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 shutout on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday afternoon at the Lion Soccer Field.

Southeastern (3-5-1, 2-1 SLC) gained its first loss in conference play after a huge momentum spark by Texas A&M-Commerce (3-6-3, 2-0-1 SLC) early in the match. The Lions snapped the Lady Lions undefeated conference record with two goals before the midway point of the first half.

SLU started the match seeking to pick up from Friday's aggression that had yet to allow a goal in league play before facing the Lions. Texas A&M-Commerce weathered the storm to quicken the pace of the match as redshirt sophomore Kaydence Ramirez found the net off a head in to secure a 1-0 lead. Midfielder Melissa Storey gained the assist in the 5th minute after setting up Ramirez from the right side of the field.

The Lady Lions looked to turn the tide of momentum late in the first half with a few narrow misses on target in efforts to cut into the deficit. In the 25th minute, Ramirez broke free on the attack to record her second goal of the match with another head in. Ramirez gained the goal off an assist from Nia Chacon due to a corner kick opportunity.

Texas A&M-Commerce attempted to extend its lead before the halftime break, but Southeastern's defense turned up the pressure to contain the Lions. Texas A&M-Commerce ended the first half with a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 2-0 lead in corner kicks.

SLU fought to emerge from the deficit with its defensive effort that kept Texas A&M-Commerce off the board for the entire second half. The Lady Lions recorded six shots in the final half, but would not be able to avoid the shutout. Southeastern finished the match with 10 shots, three corner kicks and three shots on goal led by Sara Bancevic. Goalkeeper Kendall Curran played all 90 minutes to tie her season high of six saves in the contest.

Texas A&M-Commerce ended the match with 16 shots, eight shots on goal and six corner kicks. Lion goalkeeper Gillian McKenzie protected the net with three saves to aid in securing their two-match winning streak.

Southeastern will return to Hammond, America Friday, Oct. 4 to face reigning Southland Conference champion Lamar at 7 p.m. Friday's match against the Cardinals will be televised on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to wear green and the first 100 students will receive dinner courtesy of Raising Cane's. The Lady Lions also call all Greeks to Strawberry Stadium to participate in Greek Night.
