SLU Defeats Reigning Conference Champions

The Lady Lions improve to 3-1 in league play after defeating Lamar at home

HAMMOND, La. - The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team secured its third conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Lamar Cardinals Friday evening in Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (4-5-1, 3-1-0 SLC) gained the upper hand over the two-time reigning Southland Conference champions with its aggressive edge throughout the match. Hannah McCord and Nicole O'Neill found the net for SLU to secure the victory.

The Lady Lions came out to a great start to set the tone for the match in the opening minutes of the first half. Hannah McCord connected in the eighth minute off a high shot in the net to record her fourth goal of the season. The senior leads the team with eight points to earn a season high.

Lamar (3-6-3, 1-2-1 SLC) worked to turn the tide of momentum in its favor, but Southeastern fought to limit the Cardinals' opportunities. The Lady Lions backline of defense contained Lamar for the entire duration of the first half to attain a 5-3 shot advantage.

SLU returned from the halftime break with the same intensity and remained aggressive to reap the reward in the second half. Nicole O'Neill found the net in the 53rd minute of the match to extend Southeastern's lead 2-0. O'Neill gained her second goal of the season as she soared a kick past the Cardinal's goalkeeper.

The Cardinals sensed a spark of momentum midway in the second half with a few counter attack opportunities. Midfielder Rafiatu Alhassan broke free to put Lamar on the board in the 77th minute of the match. Alhassan found the net from the 30-yard line to help the Cardinals cut into the deficit, 2-1. Lamar battled to try and equalize the match, but would get no closer as Southeastern worked the clock in the final minutes. Lamar finished the match with eight shots, three corner kicks and 11 fouls. Goalkeeper Maddie Rich played all 90 minutes and ended with one save.

Southeastern, under the leadership of Coach Nathan Gillespie, secured its biggest win so far this season to get back in the win column. The Lady Lions closed the game with nine shots, three shots on goal and five corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Kendall Curran played the entire match with two saves to aid in the victory. A total of 16 Lady Lions saw action in their second win at home.

SLU will return to action Sunday to host Northwestern State at 1 p.m. for its third annual Pink Out match. The contest will be televised on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and join the cause for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
