HAMMOND, La. - The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team gained its second win of the week in Strawberry Stadium with a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State Sunday afternoon.
Southeastern (5-5-1, 4-1-0 SLC) secured its fourth win in league play to move into first place of SLC standings. The Lady Lions' aggression throughout the match paid off as seniors
Kelsey Fuller and
Halli Roe found the net to aid in the victory.
"Friday we were very happy and today is where the excitement lies in finally beating the team that we have not beaten in the last five seasons," stated Southeastern head Coach
Nathan Gillespie. "We're happy where we are at, but not getting carried away. We must take things one game at a time and keep the train going."
The Lady Lions picked up right where they left off Friday evening, applying pressure to Northwestern State (7-5-1, 3-1-0 SLC) early. Both teams fought to control the pace of the match in the opening minutes, but Northwestern State sparked some momentum late into the half. Forward Taylor Spitzer found the net for the Lady Demons to give them the upper hand with a 1-0 lead in the 30
th minute of the match.
SLU battled to formulate a counter attack in the opening of the second half to cut into the deficit. Midfielder
Kelsey Fuller answered the call with a shot in the net to equalize the match. Fuller recorded her third goal of the season off an assist by
Isabella Walls in the 54
th minute to tie the contest, 1-1.
Northwestern State sensed the change of momentum and worked to take control of the match midway in the second half. The Lady Demons remained aggressive, but Southeastern valued each possession as paid off in the 60
th minute of the match. Senior
Hannah McCord spearheaded a perfectly executed counter attack as
Halli Roe connected in the net to take the lead for SLU, 2-1. The veteran secured her second goal of the season to earn a season high.
"We have a larger number of seniors on the squad this year and their mentality, attitude and who they are as people has brought the whole team together," commented Coach Gillespie. "The energy everyone has on the sidelines, playing or not, is credited to the culture they have built."
Southeastern fought to maintain its lead as The Lady Demons worked to quicken the pace of the match. The Lady Lions limited the Lady Demons' opportunities around the net to contain the visitors for the entire duration of the second half. Defender
Haylli Roe secured a crucial defensive stop to keep Northwestern State off the board late in the match.
The Lady Demons finished with 13 shots, six corner kicks and six shots on goal led by Emily Gundin. NSU goalkeeper Libe Banuelos ended the afternoon with five saves.
SLU weathered each attack at the net to keep Northwestern State off the board and finish the weekend undefeated at home. The Lady Lions closed the contest with nine shots, two corner kicks and seven shots on goal led by Fuller. Southeastern goalkeeper
Kendall Curran turned away five shots to help in the win.
The Lady Lions will be back on the road, traveling to Nacogdoches, Texas to face Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Friday's match will be televised on ESPN+.
