HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will host McNeese Thursday at 7 p.m. in its Southland Conference opener in Strawberry Stadium.
The Lions (4-3-1) will face conference rival McNeese (5-4) to open SLC play at home. Thursday's match against the Cowgirls will be televised on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on the women's soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net. The first fans in attendance will receive a free Southeastern soccer scarf in support of the green and gold for Scarf Night.
SLU will look to kick off league action with a solid opening at home after suffering a tough 2-0 loss to West Florida to close out its non conference schedule. The Lions battled to stay within reach, but could not overcome the Argonauts down the stretch.
Southeastern has connected in the net 16 times this season led by sophomore Alexandra Knight with five goals alongside seniors Brooke Opferman with four goals and Ella Quinlan with two goals. Junior Lainey Connell leads the green and gold with 710 minutes played as a crucial piece in the Lions defense while Kendall Curran has handled the majority of the responsibilities in the net this season with 21 saves.
McNeese ended its non conference schedule with a 1-0 loss against Sam Houston on the road last week. The Cowgirls suffered their first shutout of the season against the Bearkats, snapping their two-match winning streak. McNeese has posted 12 goals this season with 60 shots on goal and 10 assists.
The visitors are led by Isabella Baltov, Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond, Sumayah Brown and Vitoria Mitre with two goals apiece. Shannon Dempsey and Celeste Marijnissen have split time in the net for the Cowgirls, combining with 46 saves and 1.44 goals against average.
Concluding Thursday's match, Southeastern will travel to Commerce, Texas to face East Texas A&M Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The match against East Texas A&M will be streamed on ESPN+.
