Lady Lions Defeat McNeese in Conference Opener

Southeastern secures its first conference victory as Hannah McCord records her second goal of the season

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team gained a 1-0 victory over the McNeese Cowgirls in its conference opener Sunday evening at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (2-4-1, 1-0 SLC) gained all the momentum at the end of the first half with a right corner goal kick by Hannah McCord to open conference play with a victory. Lady Lion goalkeeper Kendall Curran finished with one save, playing all 90 minutes in the net.

Both teams from kickoff fought to control the pace of the game while SLU gained the upper hand with a 7-1 shot advantage over McNeese (3-7, 0-1 SLC) in the first half. McCord broke through and found the net in the 41th minute of the match off an assist from Sara Bancevic. The senior midfielder secured her second goal of the season and leads the team in scoring alongside Kelsey Fuller.

McNeese worked to form a counter attack but the Lady Lions backline of defense remained aggressive to hold the Cowgirls scoreless in the first half. The Cowgirls gained one shot and one corner kick opportunity before the halftime break.

SLU remained aggressive throughout the second half of the contest to continue pressuring McNeese's defense. Southeastern took five shots in the half led by Skye Kennedy with two shots on goal. The Cowgirls picked up their defensive intensity and held SLU scoreless for the second half of the match. McNeese ended the contest with four shots, one shot on goal, and two corner kicks. Goalkeeper Jackie Kelly played all 90 minutes for the Cowgirls with five saves.

Southeastern took care of business on both sides of the field to finish with 12 shots, six shots on goal and seven corner kicks. A total of 16 Lady Lions played in the conference victory.

The Lady Lions will travel to San Antonio, Texas to face UIW Friday, Sept. 27 for a 7 p.m. match. The contest will be televised on ESPN+.
