SLU Claims 1-0 Victory Over UIW

Southeastern secures its second consecutive win in conference play over UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team secured its second consecutive conference victory with a 1-0 victory over UIW at Benson Stadium.

Southeastern (3-4-1, 2-0 SLC) held the Cardinals (3-4-2, 0-1 SLC) scoreless and remained undefeated as Hannah McCord found the net to gain the victory for SLU midway in the second half of the match.

The Lady Lions came out the gate aggressive to secure their first corner kick within the first four minutes of the match. SLU worked to control possession early in the contest as the defense held strong to interrupt the Cardinals' counter attacks.

UIW gained momentum in the last 15 minutes of the first half with back-to-back attacks up the field to return the pressure on Southeastern's defense. SLU goalkeeper Kendall Curran had a busy night in the net to record four saves in the first half alone. Curran obtained the advantage to finish with six saves to end the night.

The Cardinals found its rhythm out of the halftime break to turn the tide of momentum early in the second half. UIW secured an 8-4 advantage in shots over the Lady Lions in the half, but would not be able to equalize the match. The Cardinals ended with 15 shots, seven shots on goal, five corner kicks and 11 fouls.

Hannah McCord stepped up as the difference maker in the second half with a high middle of the net goal in the 65th minute to secure the lead. McCord recorded her second consecutive goal of the season off an assist from Sara Bancevic. The veteran midfielder leads the team in scoring with three goals and six points after the road win.

SLU continued to value each possession in the second half, but could not add to its tally with four shots. Southeastern closed the night with six shots, five shots on goal and one corner kick opportunity. A total of 16 Lady Lions saw action in the second conference victory of the season while six players played all 90 minutes of the match.
Southeastern will return to action on Sunday continuing its two-game road stretch against Texas A&M-Commerce for a 1 p.m. match on ESPN+. Concluding Sunday's match, the Lady Lions will return to Hammond, America to face the defending Southland Conference champions Lamar Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
