Southeastern Drops 2-1 Decision at Home

SLU falls to South Alabama to close out its last non conference home game before conference play

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team continued its two-game home stretch with a 2-1 loss against South Alabama Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (0-1-1) gained the early lead, but could not contain South Alabama (2-1-0) later in the match after a three-hour weather delay.

Senior Nicole O'Neill found the net to help the Lady Lions attain an early advantage with an assist from Rylee Franklin midway into the first half. With the shot that connected high into the net, O'Neill secured Southeastern's first goal of the season.

"Rylee did a great job setting me up for the kick and dropped it on the dime," stated O'Neill. "I saw it in the air and slid to make the play despite the weather condition because anything could have happened. I was happy to put us on the board."

The Jaguars wasted no time executing a counter attack minutes later to tie the game 1-1 before the weather delay. Irene Campo scored her second goal of the season after breaking free to put South Alabama on the board.

Monique Gray extended South Alabama's lead with a feed from April Lantaigne minutes after returning from the weather delay to put the Jaguars up 2-1 before closing the first half.

SLU fought throughout the second half to regain control with close shots around the net from Kelsey Fuller and Franklin, but the Lady Lions would get no closer. Southeastern ended the match with five shots and four shots on goal. Goalkeeper Anna Blakenship finished with four saves after relieving starter Kendall Curan.

South Alabama worked the clock midway into the second half to maintain its lead. The Jaguars closed out the match with 12 shots and seven shots on goal led by sophomore midfielder Campo. South Alabama gained four corner kicks in the second half, but the Lady Lions held the Jaguars scoreless in the last 45 minutes of the contest. South Alabama goalkeeper Allsion Luckhardt captured three saves to end the match.

Southeastern will travel to Jackson, Miss. to suit up against Jackson State Saturday, Aug. 31 to begin its four-game road swing.
