HAMMOND, La. – A late rally by the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team fell short Sunday as Nicholls picked up a 9-5 win over the Lions in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Colonel starting pitcher Michael Quevedo was sharp early, striking out eight of the first 11 batters he faced, allowing Nicholls (23-11, 6-3 SLC) to eventually build a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
TJ Salvaggio got SLU (19-13, 3-6 SLC) on the scoreboard, leading off the fifth with a solo home run to left-center field. It was the seventh of the season for the junior shortstop out of Slidell, Louisiana.
A solo homer in the sixth put the Colonels back up by six, but the Lions answered with another run in the bottom of the inning.
Cole Stromboe led off the sixth with an opposite-field double off the left-field wall. He advanced to third on a fly ball and then scored on Justin William's RBI groundout.
Trailing 7-2, the Lions pulled within a pair in the eighth.
Bailyn Sorensen led off the inning with a single through the left side. As Quevedo neared 100 pitches in the game,
Jake Haze worked a walk.
Christian Garcia greeted reliever Devin Desandro with a double down the left-field line, plating both Sorensen and Haze. An errant relay throw to the plate allowed Garcia to take third on the play. After
Shea Thomas was hit by a pitch, Garcia scored on
Jake Killingsworth's sacrifice fly to center.
Nicholls added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, pushing their lead back to four.
Quevedo (4-0) earned the win, allowing four runs – all earned – in 7.1 innings pitched. He scattered four hits and two walks, striking out 11 batters. Gavin Galy earned his second save of the season, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Will Kinzeler (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in four innings of work.
