Southern Miss Pulls Away Late Against Lions

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss scored three runs in the seventh inning, pulling away from the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Lions in non-conference action Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park.

The Golden Eagles (21-12) took an early lead over Southeastern (19-14), picking up single runs in both the first and second.

Larson Fabre, a redshirt freshman from Denham Springs, Louisiana, came on in relief to hold down Southern Miss for the next four-plus innings and give SLU a chance to get back in the game.

The Lions cut the deficit in half in the third. Jeremy Rader drew a walk to open up the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Shea Thomas drew a four-pitch walk with two outs, Southern Miss went to the bullpen. Jake Killingsworth greeted reliever Chandler Best with an RBI double to right field.

Both bullpens continued to strand runners over the next several innings until the Golden Eagles broke through in the seventh.

Best (2-0) earned the win, working 2.1 scoreless innings. He scattered two hits and one walk, striking out two batters. Kros Sivley earned his third save, working the final 3.2 innings without allowing a run. SLU starting pitcher Hayden Robb (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs – both earned – in 1.1 innings.

Killingsworth (3-for-5) and Ryan Brome (3-for-4) turned in multi-hit performances at the plate for the Lions.
