Nicholls Wipes Out Early Lion Lead

Story Links

HAMMOND, La. – Nicholls rallied from a three-run deficit Saturday on the way to a 7-3 Southland Conference win over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Colonels (22-11, 5-3 SLC) claimed the series and have won five consecutive in conference. Southeastern (19-12, 3-5 SLC) has dropped four straight Southland contests and six of its last eight overall.

SLU staked starting pitcher Dakota Lee to an early lead.

Rhett Rosevear led off the bottom of the first with a single to right field. He scored on TJ Salvaggio's two-out home run to left-center. The blast was Salvaggio's sixth of the season.

Justin Williams, who launched a pair of homers in the series opener, added to his team-leading total with a solo shot in the third. It was his eighth of the season.

Nicholls took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth. Both times, the second run scored on fielding miscues by Southeastern outfielders.

Colonel pitching proceeded to shut down the SLU offense, stranding seven runners on base from the fifth through the seventh.

Two more runs in the seventh expanded Nicholls' lead and an unearned run in the eighth provided some insurance.

Colonel reliever Michael Guerrero (2-0) earned the win, logging 4.1 scoreless innings. He scattered five hits and one walk, striking out four. Lee (0-3) suffered the loss despite tossing his longest outing of the season. The right-hander allowed six runs – four earned – in 6.1 innings of work.

Salvaggio (2-for-4) and Thomas (2-for-4) turned in multi-hit performances at the plate for Southeastern.

UP NEXT
The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. It is Military Appreciation Day with free general admission for active military members presenting a valid service ID at the gate.
