HAMMOND, La. – Freshmen
Bente Bierma and
Taisia Bolsova each won in both singles and doubles play to help the Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team to a 4-0 win over St. Thomas Wednesday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Southeastern (7-9) won a tightly-contested doubles point and then earned the three singles wins necessary to clinch the victory. SLU was up a set on the three unfinished courts in singles play, closing out its nonconference schedule with a win over the visiting Tommies (6-9).
"It was nice to get a win today," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes commented. "We started slow in doubles, but worked hard to earn the point. We played very well in singles play and that's a positive heading into a pair of tough Southland Conference matches Saturday and Monday."
A win for St. Thomas on the No. 3 doubles court put Southeastern in a hole. On court 1, Bierma and
Leana Gomez (3-8) handled the UST pair of Olivia Paradise and Yinong Ma, 6-3. The point came down to No. 2, where Bolsova and
Alba Perez (4-1) pushed through for their fourth consecutive doubles win, outlasting Martha Degeorges and Regina Talavera, 7-6 (7-1) to give SLU a 1-0 lead.
Southeastern closed it out in singles play. On court 5,
Panatchakorn Suanarsa (6-6) made short work of Talavaera in a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Bolsova (5-4) gave SLU a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Naisha Srivastav on No. 6.
Mere seconds later, Bierma (7-6) clinched the victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Caroline Lindahl on No. 3. SLU's Gomez (No. 1),
Kate Oborina (No. 2) and
Claudia Di Leonardo (No. 4) all were up a set on their respective singles courts when the match was decided.
Southeastern will close out the home portion of its 2023-24 schedule Saturday, hosting Northwestern State in an 11 a.m. Southland Conference match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
