HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Missouri State in nonconference action Tuesday night at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
The Lions (6-8) saw the visiting Bears (8-4) take two of three doubles matches and win three singles matches in a singles session that saw three matches extend to a third set.
"We showed good fight against a well-coached and talented Missouri State team tonight," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We had four freshmen and a sophomore in the singles lineup and these are the type of efforts that will help our young team continue to improve moving forward."
The Southeastern pair of
Alba Perez and
Taisia Bolsova (2-1) earned a 6-1 victory on court 2 over Missouri State's Mary Houston and Sandra Lukacova. However, the Bears countered with wins on Nos. 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.
Kate Oborina (6-1) continued her winning ways on the No. 2 singles court, handling Houston, 6-3, 6-2. Missouri State earned straight set wins on courts 3 and 4 to take a 3-1 lead.
The Bears clinched the match on the top singles court, as Cristina Flaquer Fuste rallied past
Leana Gomez for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win. Both Bolsova (No. 6) and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa (No. 5) had split sets for SLU and were mired in third-set battles when the match was decided.
Tuesday's match is the last for the Lions for nearly two weeks. Following the contest versus Missouri State, SLU will next take the court March 23 at 2 p.m. at Southland Conference foe McNeese.
