HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball program scored 11 runs in the second inning Tuesday on its way to a 22-5 win over Xavier of Louisiana in seven innings at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (5-3) sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, the first of three straight times it batted around in the game against the Gold Rush (6-7).
Three of the Lions' four home runs came in the second, including their first back-to-back homers since
Shea Thomas and
Tyler Finke accomplished the feat against New Orleans on May 21, 2022.
After
Gray Rowlett led off the inning with a double inside the third-base bag, catcher
Bailyn Sorensen blasted the ball out of the ballpark to right-center field. The two-run, opposite-field shot was the first of two homers in the game for the junior out of Rayville, Louisiana.
Designated hitter
Justin Williams, in his first plate appearance as a Lion, launched a massive solo blast to center field to follow up Sorensen. In his second plate appearance of the inning,
TJ Salvaggio crushed a three-run homer to left to wrap up the scoring.
Sorensen's second clout came in the third with the bases loaded. It was the first grand slam of his career and the first of the season for SLU.
Rowlett (2-for-2) and Sorensen (2-for-3) turned in multi-hit performances for the Lions. Ten different players combined for 12 hits.
Jake Haze and Williams both drew three walks in the game as SLU tallied a total of 13 in the game, two shy of the program single-game record.
Sorensen drove in a game-high six runs, doubling his previous career best. Rowlett, Salvaggio and
Jude Hall drove in three runs each while Haze, Rowlett, Sorensen and Williams scored three runs apiece.
Redshirt freshman
Carson Robb (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run in three innings pitched. He walked two and allowed one hit, striking out four batters. Xavier starting pitcher Kimani Davis (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in his one inning of work.
