HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Jackson State in the 2024 home opener Wednesday evening at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU fell to 0-3 overall with the narrow loss, while the visiting Lady Tigers (1-0) took home the win in its spring opener.
"I'm pleased with how hard we fought, but we hurt ourselves with our decision making," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "The good news is that we can learn from this and grow."
Southeastern started the match by taking the doubles point. After
Bogi Csordas and
Alba Perez earned a default win on the court 3, the SLU pair of
Taisia Bolsova and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa gave the Lions a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory over Chiara Desia and Tyra-Nicole White on No. 2.
A default win by
Emelie Malila on No. 6 gave Southeastern a 2-0 lead. However, Jackson State answered with straight-set singles victories on courts 1,2,3 and 5 to clinch the victory.
On court 4, Lion newcomer
Bente Bierma earned her first collegiate singles victory, outlasting Desia, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, to shrink the final margin.
Southeastern will return to action Friday, traveling to Grambling for a 1 p.m. match. Saturday's scheduled match at Louisiana Christian has been rescheduled for March 10 at 1 p.m. due to expected inclement weather in the Pineville area.
