SLU Falls to Houston in Nonconference Contest

Goals by Gullory and Fuller highlight Southeastern effort

HOUSTON, Texas – An early two-goal deficit was too much for the Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team to overcome in a 5-2 nonconference loss to Houston Sunday afternoon at the Carl Lewis International Complex.

Southeastern (1-1-0) pulled within one in the latter part of the opening half on a goal by Mya Guillory, but the Lady Lions would get no closer, suffering its first loss of the season to the host Cougars (1-0-1), who scored three second-half goals.

Olivia Griffin had a busy day in goal for Southeastern. The Lady Lion goalkeeper finished the match with six saves.

UH took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute off a set piece. Krysten Kizer hit a corner kick from the left side that was ruled to have crossed SLU's goal line.

A great effort allowed the Cougars to double their lead in the 31st minute. Caitlyn Matthews ripped a shot from well outside of the box past a diving Griffin to put Houston up, 2-0.

Southeastern pulled closer in the 36th minute. Guillory, the reigning Southland Conference Midfielder of the Year, shook a defender and hit a left-footed shot past UH goalkeeper Olivia Dietrich to send SLU into the break down, 2-1.

UH pushed the lead back to two in the 65th minute, as Nadia Kamassah put a shot in inside the far post. Sofia Weber added to the Cougar lead in the 71st minute, heading in a Juliet Moore corner kick for a 4-1 Houston advantage.

Southeastern cut into the lead in the 81st minute. Kelsey Fuller headed in a Hannah McCord free kick, as the Alexander, New York native's second goal in as many games pulled the Lady Lions within, 4-2. UH responded less than a minute later, as Kamassah found the net for the second time to provide the final 5-2 margin.

Southeastern will continue its season-opening six-game road swing Saturday with a 6 p.m. contest at Ole Miss. The game will air on SEC Network+.
