EDINBURG, Texas - The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team rode a pair of first-half goals to a dominant 2-0 shutout victory over UTRGV in the 2023 season opener for both teams Friday evening at the UTRGV Soccer and Track and Field Complex.
Southeastern (1-0) controlled the action, outshooting the host Vaqueros (0-1), 13-3, on the way to the victory.
Emma Jones and
Kelsey Fuller each found the net in the SLU victory.
The Lady Lion defense limited UTRGV's opportunities, as Southeastern controlled possession to successfully open its season-opening road swing. SLU goalkeeper
Olivia Griffin turned away the Vaqueros' only two shots on goal to earn the shutout.
The Lady Lions were on the attack from the onset and broke through in the 27
th minute. Jones played a free kick from just inside midfield on frame and the ball was deflected past UTRGV goalkeeper Emilia Compian for a 1-0 Southeastern advantage.
Just under eight minutes later, SLU doubled its lead. Haylii Roe got free deep on the right flank, played a cross that Fuller headed in just inside the near post to send the Lady Lions into the break with a 2-0 cushion.
Southeastern continued to be aggressive in the second half, but could not add to its tally.
Hailie Yoder and
Maycie Massingill each had narrow misses. A total of 20 Lady Lions saw action in the season-opening victory.
SLU will return to action on Sunday, traveling to Houston (0-0-1) for a 1 p.m. match on ESPN+. The Cougars opened the season Thursday with a 0-0 tie at Washington.
