BATON ROUGE, La. – Five Southeastern Louisiana University pitchers combined for a no-hitter and the Lady Lions scored in every inning on the way to a 13-0 nonconference softball victory at Southern Tuesday afternoon at Lady Jaguars Field.
Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux (9-3),
Leah Marshall,
Alyssa Romano,
KK Ladner and
Heather Zumo combined for the 10
th no-hitter in program history, as SLU (30-12) closed out nonconference play with a convincing victory. Southern fell to 10-28 with the loss.
Aeriyl Mass,
Madison Rayner and
Maddie Watson each homered to lead a 12-hit Southeastern attack. The Lady Lions scored multiple runs in every inning off Southern starter Annelise Corona (1-7).
Mass walked and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first, while
Cam Goodman also came home on a double play to give SLU a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Mass lined a home run over the right field fence to extend the lead to 4-0. Rayner led off the third with a solo shot over the left field fence before
Madisen Blackford stole home to push the Lady Lion advantage to 6-0.
Mass tripled home a run in the top of the fourth, while
Sadie Hewitt and
Blaire Bizette each added RBI to extend the lead to 9-0. Watson powered a grand slam over the left field fence to provide the final 13-0 margin.
Southern drew a walk in the second and two free passes in the fourth, but could not record a hit, as Southeastern threw a different pitcher each inning. Of the 10 no-hitters in program history, Zumo, who closed out the game with a perfect fifth, has played a part in four.
Southeastern will return home to host HBU for a three-game series at North Oak Park. The series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and concludes Saturday at noon. All three games will be televised on ESPN+.
