Southeastern Closes Lion Classic II With 4-2 Victory Over Marist

SLU improves to 13-6 overall with Sunday's win

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team closed out Lion Classic II with a 4-2 victory over Marist Sunday morning at North Oak Park.

Southeastern (13-6) scored four runs in the first three innings to earn the victory, as Madison Rayner and Bailey Krolczyk each drove in runs. Heather Zumo (8-0), Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux, Ellie DuBois and KK Ladner combined to hold Marist (7-8) to five hits, striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey Rizzo drew a one-out walk and Rayner followed with her team-high ninth double of the season to plate Rizzo all the way from first.

Southeastern padded its lead in the bottom of the second inning. A fielding error on a double steal by Cam Goodman and Elise Jones allowed both Lady Lions to score to give SLU a 3-0 lead.

Southeastern closed out its scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Krolczyk singled home Madisen Blackford to push the Lady Lion advantage to 4-0.

Marist took advantage of a pair of SLU errors to spoil the shutout bid in the top of the sixth inning. Ladner sat the Red Foxes down in order in the seventh to spoil any comeback plans and secure her first save as a Lady Lion.

Southeastern will return to action at the upcoming Memphis Tournament. The Lady Lions will open tournament play Thursday at 4 p.m. versus Central Arkansas.
