SLU Drops 6-1 Decision to UCA on Opening Day of UofM Tournament

Southeastern faces South Dakota (11:30 a.m.) and Memphis (4:30 p.m.) Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A six-run fifth inning was too much for the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team to overcome in a 6-1 loss to Central Arkansas on the opening day of the UofM Tournament Thursday evening at Tigers Softball Complex.

Southeastern (13-7) took a 1-0 lead early, but could not make it stand. UCA (13-7) scored all six of its runs with two outs, taking advantage of a pair of SLU errors.

Heather Zumo (8-1) took her first loss of the season in the circle Friday. The Lady Lion ace scattered six hits and allowed one earned run in 4.2 innings of work.

Bailey Krolczyk and Lexi Johnson had two hits apiece for Southeastern. Cam Goodman scored SLU's lone run.

Zumo and UCA's Jordan Johnson (4-6) matched zeroes until SLU took the lead in the top of the third inning. Goodman singled, stole second, moved to third on a foul out and scored on a wild pitch to put SLU on top.

Zumo retired the first 11 batters she faced, but the Bears finally got to her in the fifth. A RBI single by Tremere Harris tied the score, then another run came home on a SLU error to give Central Arkansas the lead for good. Jaylee Engelkes tacked on two more runs with an RBI single and then a two-base Southeastern error plated two more runs and gave the Bears a commanding lead.

In the sixth, Krolczyk singled with two outs and tried to score on Johnson's second double of the game, but was thrown out at the plate. UCA's Johnson retired SLU in order in the seventh to close the game.

Southeastern will be back in action Friday, facing South Dakota at 11:30 a.m. and host Memphis at 4:30 p.m. Live stats for both games, provided by Memphis, will be accessible via the softball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
