Southeastern Falls to Northwestern State in Regular Season Finale

Third-seeded Lady Lions (14-10, 10-4 SLC) to open Southland Tournament play Friday at 1:30 p.m.

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team closed out the 2021-22 regular season with a 56-51 Southland Conference loss to Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum.

SLU (14-10, 10-4 Southland) will be the No. 3 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for March 10-13 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The Lady Lions will receive a bye into the quarterfinals and will host the winner of Thursday's first-round matchup between No. 6 NSU and No. 7 New Orleans Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Should Southeastern get past the Lady Demons or Privateers Friday, they will face second-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals. The semifinal winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. in the championship game with the winner earning the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The first three days will be televised on ESPN+. Sunday's championship game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Caitlyn Williams led Southeastern with a game-high 18 points, while Chrissy Brown posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brown also paced the Lady Lions with three assists, while Williams and Breonca Ducksworth contributed three steals apiece.

Candace Parramore led three Lady Demons in double figures with 12 points, while JaMiya Braxton and Monette Bolden chipped in with 11 points apiece. Jordan Todd paced NSU (12-13, 5-9 SLC) with a game-high 15 rebounds.

Neither team led more than six in a game that featured nine lead changes and six ties. Southeastern held a 40-34 led on a bucket by Morgan Davis with 4:09 left in the third quarter. However, NSU held the Lady Lions scoreless for the rest of the quarter and went into the final period with a 41-40 lead.

The game remained tight for the majority of the fourth quarter. The final tie came on a Giaratano bucket with 3:14 left that deadlocked the score at 49-49. NSU scored the next five to take a 54-49 advantage.

A basket by Alexius Horne cut the lead to three with just over two minutes left, but Southeastern could not find the net again. The Lady Lions remained within three until the final seconds when Parramore netted a pair of free throw to ice the win.
