HAMMOND, La. – The No. 1 doubles tandem of
Putri Insani and
Sonya Kanarskaya picked up a victory, but it was not enough as Southeastern Louisiana University dropped a 4-0 decision to Lamar in nonconference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU (0-6), which played five freshmen on Saturday, has been missing a minimum of two starters for every match this spring and were without three in Saturday's loss. Lamar improved to 5-2 overall with the win in a matchup of former Southland Conference rivals.
"Our attitude and effort was much better today," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We're going to keep working and improving as we hopefully get healthier as conference play approaches."
Insani and Kanarskaya, teaming for the first time this spring, defeated the Cardinal pair of Alba Perez and Elena Rodriguez. However, LU earned a 6-3 win on court 2 and claimed a default win on No. 3 to take the doubles point.
In singles play, Insani was up a set over Elena Tairyan on No. 1, while SLU's
Polina Paunova was on the verge of splitting sets on court 2 when the match was stopped. Lamar earned victories on courts No. 3,5 and 6 to secure the win.
SLU will open a three-match road swing with a 2 p.m. match at Southern Wednesday in Baton Rouge.
