HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit in a 51-40 loss to HBU in Southland Conference action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Southeastern (12-7, 8-1 Southland) suffered its first Southland loss and saw its eight-game winning streak snapped. HBU (11-9, 7-2 Southland) avenged a 52-30 loss to the Lady Lions last Saturday in Houston.
SLU shot just 25.0 percent (14-for-56) from the floor in Saturday's loss.
Breonca Ducksworth and
Hailey Giaratano led Southeastern with eight points apiece.
Caitlyn Williams paced the Lady Lions with 13 rebounds, as SLU finished with 40-30 rebounding advantage.
HBU had three players finish in double figures on the way to the win. N'Denasija Collins and Enya Maguire posted 14 points apiece, while Julija Vujakovic chipped in 11 points for the Huskies.
Southeastern dug a sizable hole after its poorest offensive half of the season to open Saturday's contest. The Lady Lions shot just 15.4 percent (4-for-26) from the floor in the initial 20 minutes and went into halftime trailing, 25-11.
The Lady Lions would not go away quietly, however. The Southland's top defensive team held HBU to eight points in the third quarter and went into the final period behind, 33-27.
Southeastern opened the fourth quarter with a
Chrissy Brown put back and a
Hailey Giaratano three to cut the lead to 33-32 with 9:18 remaining. SLU would get no closer.
HBU answered with a 7-1 run to take a 40-33 lead midway through the final quarter. The Lady Lions got as close as four down the stretch, but the Huskies held off the Southland Conference leaders to hand Southeastern its first loss since Dec. 20.
Southeastern will hit the road for a showdown at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday at 5 p.m. The outright conference lead will be on the line in the game, which will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at LionSports.net/ListenLive.
