HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Sam Houston in the rubber game of a Southland Conference series Sunday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Sunday's loss ended Southeastern's streak of winning five straight Southland Conference series, as the Lady Lions fell to 24-16 overall and 13-5 in league play. Sam Houston (13-23, 10-8 Southland) bounced back from a 13-0 loss in Saturday's series opener to win the final two games of the three-game set.
Madison Watson drove in a run for the Lady Lions, while
Madisen Blackford and
Cameron Goodman each scored runs.
Heather Zumo (14-3) took her first loss in the circle in conference play on Sunday, ending a streak of eight straight decisions for the Lady Lion ace.
The Bearkats took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Brooke Malia led off the frame with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Scheaffer to give SHSU the early 1-0 advantage.
The first three batters of the third reached for the Bearkats, resulting in another run for the hosts. Zumo limited the damage, retiring the next three Sam Houston batters to keep the deficit at 2-0.
Southeastern finally got to SHSU starter Mika Vento (7-5) in the top of the fourth inning. Blackford singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Karlee Kraft and scored on an RBI single by Watson to cut the lead in half.
SLU loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning, as
Anna Rodenberg singled,
Aeriyl Mass walked and
Lindsey Rizzo singled to pack the bags with two outs. However, Vento retired Blackford to keep Sam Houston in the lead.
The Bearkats padded that cushion in its half of the fifth. A two-run single by Courtney White gave the Bearkats a three-run advantage.
SLU made one last push in the top of the seventh inning. Goodman singled with two outs, stole second and scored on a SHSU error. However, Vento recovered to retire Rizzo to close out the victory.
