Southeastern Sweeps Doubleheader at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana swept a Southland Conference doubleheader at Lamar, 6-5 in seven innings and 6-2, Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The pair of wins over Lamar (10-7, 2-5 Southland) jumped the Lions (14-8, 8-3 Southland) back into first place in the conference standings.

Southeastern wrap up its nine-game road trip and the series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. Southeastern plans to start freshman right-hander Brennan Stuprich (1-1, 3.32) against Lamar sophomore left-hander Dylan Johnson (1-1, 1.69) in the series finale.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network – KSLU 90.9 FM – in addition to online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive and via both the Lions Gameday Experience and TuneIn Radio apps.

Other options to follow Sunday's action include live statistics and the @LionUpBaseball Twitter account. Links to audio and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

GAME 1 – Southeastern 6, Lamar 5 (7 innings)
The Lions came out swinging the bats in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.

Evan Keller led off the game with a single through the left side and Eli Johnson followed with a ground-rule double to left-center field. Jacob Burke followed with an infield single, plating Keller with the first run of the game. Johnson scored on Preston Faulkner's sacrifice fly, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Lamar immediately answered, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Southeastern regained the lead in the second. Rhett Rosevear knocked a one-out single up the middle before stealing second base. He scored on Tyler Finke's two-out RBI single to left field.

A two-out, pinch-hit double in the bottom of the fourth led to three runs and the Cardinals took their first lead of the series, 5-3.

The Lions responded immediately, regaining the lead in the fifth. Johnson drew a leadoff walk, forcing Lamar starting pitcher Zach Bravo from the game. After a strikeout, Preston Faulkner lined an RBI triple to right-center off reliever Joe Buckendorff (0-1) and Christian Garcia followed with a two-run home run to left field.

Southeastern right-hander Will Warren (4-1) earned the win, allowing five runs in six innings of work. Cole Hoskins earned his third save of the season, tossing a scoreless seventh. Buckendorff was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Finke (2-for-3), Garcia (2-for-4) and Rosevear (2-for-3) each picked up multiple hits for the Lions. Faulkner and Garcia both drove in a pair.

GAME 2 – Southeastern 6, Lamar 2
The Lions wasted little time grabbing the lead in the second game of the doubleheader, picking up three runs in the second inning.

Garcia led off the inning with a single to center, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Finke followed with a bunt single before stealing second base. Another wild pitch plated Garcia and sent Finke to third before Rosevear drew a walk. Finke scored on Nick Ray's groundout to third and Rosevear scored on Keller's two-out double down the left-field line.

As starting pitcher Kyle Bartley (3-1) worked in and out of trouble, Finke produced another run in the fourth. He led off the inning with a single to right, promptly stealing his second base of the game. Two more wild pitches by Lamar starter Josh Ekness (0-1) plated Finke.

The Lions tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Faulkner singled to lead off the inning, advancing to third on Finke's one-out double to left-center. Rosevear followed with a single to left, driving in both runners.

Lamar finally scratched across of pair of runs in the ninth but left the bases loaded for the third time in the game. The Cardinals left 14 runners on base in the second game.

Bartley earned the win, allowing five hits and a pair of walks in five scoreless innings. He struck out three. Kyle Flettrich earned his first save of the season, working the final four innings. Ekness was charged with the loss, allowing four runs in four innings pitched.

Finke (3-for-3) enjoyed another multi-hit game, scoring three runs. Faulkner (2-for-2) also picked up pair of hits, joining Finke in reaching base in all four plate appearances.
