Southeastern Defeats Lamar in Extra Innings, Sweeps Series

BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana scored a run in the top of the 10th inning and right-hander Dalton Aspholm stranded a pair of runners in the bottom half of the inning as the Lions defeated Lamar, 9-8, Sunday in 10 innings at Vincent-Beck Stadium, sweeping the four-game series.

With the win, the Lions (16-8, 9-3 Southland) wrapped up their nine-game road trip in sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference, one game ahead of Nicholls (11-12, 8-4 Southland).

Southeastern came out swinging, staking starting pitcher Brennan Stuprich to a 4-0 lead before he ever took the mound.

Evan Keller drew a walk to lead off the game, advancing to third base on Jacob Burke's one-out, ground-rule double to left field. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Preston Faulkner pulled a ball that Lamar's third baseman whiffed on, allowing both runners to score.

After a wild pitch advanced Faulkner to second, Cardinal starting pitcher Dylan Johnson walked Christian Garcia. With two outs, Rhett Rosevear reached on a ball off the glove of the third baseman to load the bases. Nick Ray followed with a two-run double to right field.

The Cardinals cut Southeastern's lead in half with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Neither team scored again until Lamar third baseman Anthony Quirion launched a solo home run to center field in the sixth.

Southeastern responded, scoring three runs in the seventh. Keller once again drew a leadoff walk and Eli Johnson was hit by a pitch. Jacob Burke then ripped a ball at the shortstop. After knocking it down, the Lamar infielder tried to cut down Keller at third but ended up throwing the ball away. Keller scored and the other runners advanced into scoring position. Johnson scored on a Faulkner groundout and Burke scored on Tyler Finke's sacrifice bunt.

Lamar bounced right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning off reliever Andrew Landry.

The Lions added an insurance run in the ninth, taking an 8-6 lead. Johnson reached on a two-base error by the center fielder, advancing to third on a fly ball to right and scoring on another Faulkner groundout.

A two-run home run off Cole Hoskins (2-0) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.

In the 10th, Rosevear drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Brandon Hale advanced to third on Nick Ray's hustle double to center and scored the eventual winning run on a groundout by pinch-hitter Champ Artigues.

Aspholm sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around an infield hit and a walk. A wild pitch advanced the lead runner to third before a ground ball to short ended the game.

Stuprich did not factor in the decision despite allowing just three runs – all earned – in six innings of work.

Hoskins earned the win, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Aspholm earned the save, the first of his collegiate career. Lamar closer Jack Dallas (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in 3.2 innings of relief work.
