BEAUMONT, Texas – Will Kinzeler and a pair of Lion relievers combined on a three-hit shutout Friday as Southeastern Louisiana defeated Lamar, 3-0, in Southland Conference action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Southeastern (13-8, 6-3 Southland) took advantage of wildness by Lamar (10-5, 2-3 Southland) starting pitcher Trevin Michael (1-1) in the second inning to push across a run, adding insurance runs in the fifth and eighth.
Kinzeler (3-1) allowed a single hit over seven shutout innings, walking four and striking out seven to earn the win.
Cole Hoskins retired the side in order in the eighth inning and
Noah Hughes earned his second save of the season, working a scoreless ninth. Michael suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in 4.1 innings pitched. He walked six and struck out six.
In the second, Michael issued back-to-back walks to
Gaby Cruz and
Rhett Rosevear before uncorking a wild pitch that allowed both to advance into scoring position. Cruz scored on
Nick Ray's RBI groundout to give the Lions the lead.
Southeastern added a run in the fifth.
Jacob Burke reached on a throwing error by the third baseman before Michael issued a walk to
Preston Faulkner, the final batter he faced.
Christian Garcia greeted reliever Max Mize with an RBI single up the middle, driving in Burke.
Garcia chased Mize from the game in the eighth with a one-out double off the base of the center-field wall. Advancing to third on Cruz' fly out to right, Garcia scored when Rosevear slapped an opposite-field single through the left side.
