Southeastern Gets Past HBU, 9-4, to Win Southland Series

SLU improves to 14-12 overall and 5-1 in Southland play

HOUSTON, Texas – A six-run second inning propelled Southeastern Louisiana to a 9-4 victory over Houston Baptist in the rubber game of a Southland Conference softball series Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

SLU (14-12, 5-1 Southland) won its second straight league series thanks in large part to an 11-hit attack. Madisen Blackford led the way with a 3-for-4 showing and three RBI.

Aeriyl Mass and Madison Watson each had two hits apiece for SLU, while Cameron Goodman homered and drove in a game-high four runs. Heather Zumo (9-2) went the distance in the circle for the Lady Lions, fanning seven to earn the win.

SLU took the lead versus HBU starter Katy Janes (0-1) in the top of the first inning. Mass led off the game with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Rizzo and scored on an RBI groundout by Blackford to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.

HBU knotted the score on an RBI single by Jasie Roberts in the bottom of the first. Southeastern sent 10 to the plate in the top of the second, Blackford and Goodman drove in two runs each, while Audrey Greely and Mass added RBI of their own to give SLU a commanding 7-1 lead.

Zumo cruised through the next several innings until Houston Baptist cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Autumn Sydlik cut the Lady Lion advantage in half with a three-run home to pull the Huskies within, 7-4.

SLU closed out the scoring in the seventh inning. Cameron Beal led off the frame with a single and one out later, Goodman hit her second home run of the season to give the Lady Lions a 9-4 lead. Zumo made it stand up, retiring HBU in order in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the series win.
