HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team completed its Southland Conference series sweep of Lamar with a 7-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
Southeastern (12-10, 3-0 Southland) opened Southland Conference play with a series sweep for the first time since 2001. Lamar fell to 2-21 overall and 0-3 in league action.
The trio of
Sophie Hannabas,
MC Comeaux (5-4) and
Heather Zumo combined to hold the Cardinals to three hits in the win. Seven different Lady Lions recorded hits in the win, as
Madisen Blackford led SLU with two runs scored and
Lexi Johnson paced the squad with two RBI.
Lamar loaded the bases in the top of the first inning versus Hannabas. With the bags packed, the Cards caught SLU napping and Aleka Xayaseng stole home to give LU a 1-0 lead.
SLU answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. Blackford was hit by a pitch, then
Ella Manzer and
Ellie DuBois drew consecutive walks to load the bases. After Blackford scored on a wild pitch, Johnson singled home Manzer and DuBois to give Southeastern a 3-1 lead.
Lamar took advantage of two Southeastern errors in the top of the third inning to tie the score at 3-3. The game would remain deadlocked until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Lions took control for good.
Cameron Goodman and
Aeriyl Mass opened the frame with consecutive singles, then scored on a throwing error by LU shortstop Hannah Kinkade. Blackford then doubled home another run and stole home to give Southeastern a 7-3 lead.
Zumo made the lead stand from there. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native struck out five in two innings of shutout relief to close out the win.
