HAMMOND, La. – No. 12 LSU used big innings to pull away for a 12-1 nonconference softball victory over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night at North Oak Park.
SLU (12-11) had its four-game winning streak snapped on the final game of a five-game home stand. The Tigers improved to 16-7 overall with the win.
Aeriyl Mass led Southeastern at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, while
Audrey Greely was 2-for-3 for SLU.
Anna Rodenberg scored the Lady Lions' lone run and was driven in by
Lexi Johnson.
Sophie Hannabas (3.1 IP, 3 K) and
Ellie DuBois (3.0 IP, 5 K) did good things in the circle in relief for the Lady Lions.
LSU took the lead early in the top of the first versus SLU freshman
MC Comeaux (5-5). A two-run double by Georgia Clark put the Tigers up, 2-0. An RBI single by Taylor Pleasants in the second gave LSU a 3-0 advantage.
SLU put runners on in each of the first three innings, but Ali Kilponen (4-3) pitched out of trouble for LSU, stranding four Lady Lions in the first three frames.
LSU broke the game open in the fourth. A two-run single by Amanda Doyle highlighted a three-run inning and gave the Tigers a 6-0 cushion.
Southeastern finally got on the board in its half of the fourth without the benefit of a hit.
Madison Watson walked and gave way to Rodenberg on the base paths. The Thibodaux, Louisiana native advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a passed ball and scored an unearned run on an RBI groundout by Johnson to cut the lead to 6-1.
LSU got the run back plus in the fifth, as Morgan Cummins hit a solo home run and another run came home on an error. In the seventh, an inside-the-park grand slam by Raeleen Gutierrez closed out the scoring for the Tigers.
Mass and Greely each singled around a
Sadie Hewitt walk in the bottom of the seventh, but LSU reliever Morgan Smith retired Rizzo for the final out.
