HAMMOND, La. – Team Mamba piled on several late insurance runs Friday on the way to a 7-0 win during a Southeastern Louisiana fall baseball intrasquad scrimmage at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Starting pitchers
Trey Shaffer and Kyle Bartley kept hitters in check early before yielding to the bullpen. Mamba scratched across the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the fifth against reliever Noah Smith (0-1). After
Kenneth Bell, III was hit by a pitch to open the inning, he promptly stole both second and third base. Following a walk and stolen base by Rhett Rosevear, Bell scored on Sebastian Bentz' RBI single center field.
Mamba added six more runs in the final three innings with all but one being unearned.
Kyle Flettrich (1-1) earned the win, logging four shutout innings in relief. The redshirt senior from Belle Chasse, Louisiana scattered two hits and a walk, striking out a pair of batters. Smith suffered the loss, allowing three runs – one earned – in three innings of work. Despite not factoring in the decision, Shaffer logged three scoreless frames and Bartley did not allow a run in his four-inning outing.
Cade Scott, a freshman catcher from Benton, Louisiana, led all hitters with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He also drove in a pair. Bentz picked up another hit later in the scrimmage, finishing the day 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Bell (1-for-3), in addition to scoring the first run of the game, blasted his first home run of the fall leading off the ninth. Others picking up hits Friday were
Tyler Finke (1-for-4),
Christian Garcia (1-for-4),
Brandon Hale (1-for-2),
Evan Keller (1-for-2),
Connor Manola (1-for-1) and
Nick Ray (1-for-4).
