Sunday's game is a Cane's Challenge contest as well as Military and Local Hero Appreciation Day. The Lions are looking to snap a three-game skid, having dropped the Jacksonville series finale and a pair at ULM.
Southeastern is led by
Jacob Burke (.348) and
Tyler Finke (.250) at the plate. Burke, Finke,
Brandon Hale and
Nick Ray have each produced a pair of extra-base hits. Finke and
Champ Artigues have both driven in a team-high five runs while Burke leads the team with four stolen bases.
Junior left-hander
Trey Shaffer (2-0, 1.69) draws the pitching nod in the series opener, facing Seawolf southpaw Jared Milch (0-1, 1.64). Sophomore right-hander
Grant Upton (1-0, 1.80) heads to the bump Saturday to oppose Stony Brook righty Sam Turcotte (0-1, 1.64). Southeastern has yet to announce a starting pitcher for the finale, but the Seawolves are slated to send out right-hander Josh O'Neill (0-0, 0.00).
Evan Giordano (.400), Brett Paulsen (.333) and Stanton Leuthner (.286) are Stony Brook's leading hitters. Leuthner owns the Seawolves' only home run while Shane Paradine has driven in a team-high three runs. Giordano and Leuthner are tied for the team lead with a pair of stolen bases each.
Stony Brook has dropped four in-a-row. Five of the Seawolves' six losses this season have been by two runs or less, including all three games at Clemson this past weekend.
The all-time series is tied, 3-3, with Southeastern taking 2-of-3 last season and Stony Brook winning 2-of-3 in 2008. All six games have been played in Hammond.
Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at No. 11-ranked LSU. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
