HAMMOND, La. – James Benson II was voted Southland Conference Athlete of the Week for the Southeastern Louisiana Track and Field team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Benson II, a sophomore, broke school records in the 200 and 400m Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
The Charleston, Illinois native ran 21.07 in the 200m breaking SLU's Shannon Glover's record of 21.10 set March 3, 2012. The mark ranks Benson II third in the Southland in the 200m.
The Salmen High grad also set a new Southland Conference Indoor record in the 400m Saturday finishing in 46.34 which ranks 14
th in the nation this year.
Benson II is also part of the 4x400 relay team which includes reigning Southland Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year DJ Ruffin,
Donovan Storr and
Johnathon Sawyer. The four ran a 3:07.67 at the Carolina Challenge Jan. 31 in Columbia, South Carolina. The group is currently ranked 11
th nationally in the event.
Benson II will look to ride the momentum into the Southland Conference Indoor Championships which begin Sunday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
