BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The Southeastern Louisiana track team showed they are ready for the indoor championships this weekend as they set 16 personal bests Friday and Saturday in the Samford Open Indoor Meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
On the women's side,
Sophie Daigle had another stellar weekend breaking two more school records. The junior ran a 2:16.94 in the 800m breaking the SLU record held by Lekesha Jelks (2:17.74 – 2/5/16 Southland Indoor Championships). The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native also put her name in the record books in the 5k running 17:18.48 breaking a 15-year campus record held by Mandy Wallace (17:45.87 – 2/16/05 Southland Conference Indoor Championships).
For the men, SLU's
Armonte Paulk set a personal best in the 60m race. The sophomore finished second in the event Saturday with a time of 6.82. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Paulk is now ranked fifth in the Southland in the 60m.
James Benson II also had a good showing Saturday. A Charleston, Illinois product, Benson set a personal best winning the 400m running a 47.27. With his performance Saturday, the sophomore claimed the top spot in the Southland in the 400m.
Also for the men,
Grant O'Callaghan continues to shine on the distance side for Southeastern. The junior from Flowery Branch, Georgia ran a 4:11.03 in the one-mile race which keeps him second in the Southland.
"Today was a really good day at the office for us," said SLU track head coach
Corey Mistretta. "We improved our conference standing in a lot of events and both the men's and women's teams competed like champions.
Sophie Daigle continues to improve at a staggering rate. She has fully committed to her training, attacks it every day, then steps to the line and competes with a lot of confidence. Her assault on the Southeastern record book is very impressive. After the success from this weekend, both teams are excited to get back to work in preparation for the conference championships in two weeks."
Southeastern has just one more tune-up meet before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Sunday and Monday March 1-2 in Birmingham. SLU will compete in the LSU Twilight Friday, Feb. 21 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
