2020-21 Southeastern Football Fall Practice Report No. 2

Big plays on both sides of the ball highlight Wednesday's workout

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team continued its first week of fall practice preparations for the spring 2021 season on Wednesday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

Wednesday marked the second of 15 practices during the fall practice session, which has replaced the normal spring practice with the competition season being postponed until spring. The Lions will practice Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:40 p.m. and Fridays at 10:10 a.m.

Wednesday's workout was a competitive affair. Early on in team drills, the offense had the advantage. Wide receivers CJ Turner and Nick Kovacs both broke free for long catch-and-runs.

Later in the practice, the defense answered with a couple of highlight plays of their own. Justin Douglas and Jack Henderson each recorded interceptions for the Lions.

Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with the competition level on Wednesday.

"We have good players on both sides of the ball," Scelfo said. "We never want to see either side of the ball dominate a practice session, because that means one side isn't practicing as hard as they need to. The offense made some explosive plays early on, but the defense answered and came up with some big plays.

"I've really been proud of the way our guys have responded to having the fall season moved to the spring," Scelfo continued. "We're doing things now that are going to make us better both individually and as a team come spring."

The Lions will put the pads on for the first time for Friday's practice. SLU is scheduled to open its six-game, conference-only spring schedule on Feb. 27 at Sam Houston State. The Lions host McNeese on March 6 at Strawberry Stadium to open their home slate.
